A Bremen man accused of causing a crash that caused the death of one of his passengers has been indicted by a Carroll County grand jury.

The grand jury brought back an indictment charging 21-year-old Andrew Alan Bryant with homicide by vehicle, driving under the influence and failure to maintain lane.

Bryant will be arraigned next Thursday.

The accident, which occurred in Temple on Rainey Road, killed Derek Dewberry, 21, of Bremen last June. Also injured in the crash was Bryant himself and another passenger, 25-year-old Tammy Athey.

The Georgia State Patrol reported the vehicle was driving on Rainey Road around 9:10 p.m. when it left the road, crossed over a driveway, hit two mailboxes and then overturned. All three occupants were ejected from the Ford Mustang convertible.

The GSP also reported that seat belts were not in use by any of the three occupants and that blood was drawn to test for alcohol.

• Also to be arraigned next week are the two Carrollton women who allegedly neglected their sister — a disabled woman police found in a closet at their Garden Ridge Drive home.

Peggy Annette Sanford, 52, and Brenda Kay Edgens, 54, were indicted in December on the charge of unlawful neglect of a disabled adult.

The pair will be arraigned on Tuesday.

Police arrested Sanford and Edgens in July after finding their 57-year-old disabled sister, Vivian Sanford, in a closet. The woman appeared to be suffering from "severe malnutrition," police said at the time of the women's arrests.

According to the arrest warrant on file at the Carroll County Courthouse, the two defendants "willfully and knowingly disregarded common care by not cleaning [the victim], not providing medical treatment and failing to provide proper nourishment."

The officer who wrote the warrant said Vivian Sanford had "extremely matted hair, soiled diaper" and sores and scabs all over her body when she was found last summer.

Edgens was the primary caretaker, and the warrant said she receives her income from the victim's disability payments.

Police discovered the woman when they were attempting to fulfill a warrant for the previous owners of the home, who they found out no longer lived there.

• Also indicted by the grand jury was the Carrollton man accused of stealing a safe full of silver.

Terry Christopher Teal, 51, was indicted on charges of burglary, theft by taking and criminal damage to property.

Teal will be arraigned next Tuesday.

According to the arrest warrant on file, Teal entered the Hog Liver Road home of the victim last summer without the victim's permission.

Teal is alleged to have taken a safe with $90,000 in silver from the home.
